What you need to know
Most students declare a major in the spring term of their first year at MIT. Those who do not must decide on a major by the end of their sophomore year. Visit the Office of the First Year for information about choosing a major.
Some key points to remember:
- Meet with your advisor and declare a major by spring Drop Date of your first year.
- The process for declaring your major is available from the Office of the First Year each spring.
- Your major declaration takes effect at the beginning of the summer term, and you will be assigned a new advisor in that department.
